Ruler of the motocross roost

In 1970, Zündapp decided to market competition models for motocross and enduro. This new machine used the same bottom end as the contemporary road bikes, but its completely new top end was derived from the machines that won the International Six Days' Trial. The new cylinder and head assembly was instantly recognizable by its oversized fins. The robust double cradle frame was inspired by the works machines.

Terror of the Circuits

Right from its launch, this machine was the terror of the German motocross circuits: The Zündapp MC took five consecutive German Championship titles, 1971 to 1975. In 1973, a 17 year-old Belgian rider named Andre Malherbe won the newly-instituted FIM 125 Cup, beating a Yamaha and another Zündapp 125 MC ridden by Schneider.

Absolute Domination

Malherbe repeated the feat in 1973, with Schneider in second place this time; the Zündapp domination was absolute. However, in 1975, the FIM Cup was abandoned, and the 125cc World Championship was officially created. Malherbe began the season well, but then injured himself, and was unable to defend his position. It was Gaston Rahier who became World Champion on a Suzuki, ahead of the Belgian rider De Roover, on his Zündapp. The success of the 125 MC was perpetuated on dirt with the 125 GS Enduro, which picked up many trophies, particularly in the ISDT. Even more astounding, the road-going 125 KS launched in 1971 used exactly the same frame and engine assembly as the 125 MC. What a bike!
