650 LS Savage -1991

A noble Savage

Purely utilitarian motorcycles attract few customers in Western countries, yet sports models only appeal to an exclusive group of enthusiasts of off-road trail bikes. All are tall in the saddle and uncompromising in style.

A New Class of Utility Bike

Nevertheless the motorcycle is the best alternative to the automobile in congested urban traffic, so - in order to attract a new class of customers the major manufacturers have begun developing utility bikes with a more macho image: customs.

Styled on the Intruder

Born out of the vogue for the HarleyDavidson, the style has spread to all the classes in every displacement. One of the more original approaches was that made by Suzuki with this LS Savage, unveiled in 1986. Its single-cylinder engine hasn't much in common with the other 650-equipped trail version of the marque. On the other hand, it picks up all the styling cues of Suzuki's big custom V-twin, the Intruder. A massively tall vertical single, this engine gives the LS its unique appeal, with a thickset stance and elegantly underscored by chrome and polished metalwork. The LS conceals technical sophistication with four valves, an internal balancer shaft to eliminate engine vibrations and a cogged belt final drive that is silent, flexible and maintenance-free. Low in the saddle, the Savage combines a docile nature with seriously good low-speed torque, which makes it a nice bike to ride (as long as you don't plan on any long journeys, where its riding position quickly becomes tiring).
